Right mix A new renewable energy project getting under way in South Africa features a combination of three co-located green power sources. The Oya hybrid energy project, to be built between Sutherland in the Northern Cape and Ceres in the Western Cape, has reached financial close, reports Africa Business Communities. According to Engineering News, meanwhile, the project will be developed by G7 Renewable Energies, ENGIE, Meadows Oya Energy and Perpetua RMI4, and falls under the South African government’s Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement programme. The project, which will have a dispatchable capacity of 128 MW, includes 155 MWp of solar PV power, 86 MW of wind power and 92 MW/242 MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage. A hybrid controller will orchestrate power supply and dispatch it to the national grid when it is needed. It is believed the plant is one of the largest hybrid energy projects of its kind in on the continent. 20 February 2024 Image: Freepik
