In a bid to promote e-mobility in Kenya, an electric vehicle (EV) company is planning to set up 300 EV charging stations across Kenya in the next year .

Speaking from Naivasha, north of Nairobi, where the first station was opened at the end of June, Electric Go MD Eve Maina said the company was helping the government to achieve its goal of increasing the number of EVs in the country to 200 000 by 2025, or 5% of registered vehicles.

According to ESI Africa, she said the number of EV users had grown from fewer than 1 000 to 1 500 in just eight months. The number would increase as consumers gained more access to charging infrastructure, she said.

Maina added the company was also integrating renewable energy sources such as solar into its infrastructure.

‘We intend to champion the adoption of e-transport solutions in the country and help the country move from fossil or carbon oils in powering the motor industry,’ she said.
