Going nuts A consortium of private investors is injecting US$3.5 million into the construction of a cashew nut processing plant in southern Mozambique. The plant will be built in Mandlakazi, Gaza, and early operations will cover 1 000 ha out of a total planned 7 000 ha. According to Super Boa Farm, the owner of the project, the first phase of operations will directly involve more than 500 people, impacting about 1 200 families – mainly small producers. As reported by Club of Mozambique report, Super Boa Farm financial director Isac Nhantumbo, says that ‘we have about 600 cashew seedlings planted since the beginning of the preparatory activity in April. Once it starts operating, the factory will process cashew nuts, as well as produce spirits, biodiesel and charcoal’. The plant will create at least 1 000 permanent jobs over the next five years, once the project is fully operational. Construction is expected to be completed in two years. 15 November 2022 Image: Unsplash
