The Morocco government has taken another step towards formalising the country’s cannabis industry.

While it passed pro-cannabis legislation last year, the government has just this month approved the first 10 permits for the use of cannabis in medicine and industry and for export.

According to Reuters, farmers who organise into co-operatives in the northern mountain areas of Al Houceima, Taounat and Chefchaouen will be gradually allowed to grow cannabis to meet the needs of the legal market.

The law passed last year, which does not legalise recreational use of cannabis, is an effort to improve the income of farmers, who have been growing the plant illegally for years, and protect them from drug traffickers exporting it illegally to Europe.
