The framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is soon to be put to the test by seven countries in a trial phase.

Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, Egypt, Cameroon, Rwanda and Mauritius are taking part in the AfCFTA Initiative on Guided Trade to test the environmental, legal and trade policy principles for intra-African trade, reports the East African. The trial will be rolled out by the fourth quarter of 2022.

The countries have selected goods that include livestock, fish, fruit, vegetables, spices, fish, medicines, fertiliser, paper and industrial chemicals.

The AfCFTA framework, which allows preferential tariffs, applies only to trade between countries that do not already belong to a common economic bloc.
