Positive energy A 3 800 km subsea interconnector is being planned to deliver 3.6 GW of renewable power from Morocco to the UK. ESI Africa reports that the interconnector is part of the Xlinks Morocco-UK Power project, which also includes a 1 500 km2 power-generation facility in the Guelmim Oued Noun region of Morocco, and a converter station at both ends of the interconnector. Comprising a solar plant and a wind farm, as well as 20 GWh of battery storage, the power-generation facility will be capable of supplying 8% of the UK’s electricity needs once complete. It will have a generation capacity of 10.5 GW of zero-carbon electricity, of which 3.6 GW will be supplied to the UK. The interconnector, made up of four high-voltage direct-current cables, will be built by UK technology developers Xlinks and Octopus Energy Group. 31 May 2022 Image: Gallo/Getty Images
