The first transshipment cargo has docked at the new deep-water Port of Lamu in Kenya.

The Kenyan-owned ship from Tanzania carried 63 containers of goods bound for the Far East. Business Daily Africa reports that the port will mainly facilitate the movement of transshipment cargo along the Indian Ocean to countries such as the Seychelles and Comoros. Kenya is also targeting transshipment services to Ethiopia and South Sudan.

Transshipment typically moves cargo or containers from one vessel to another while in transit.

According to Reuters, the first ships docked at the port in May, when the first berth was commissioned. Construction, which began in 2014, is still ongoing. The China Communications Construction Company is building the port at a cost of US$3 billion.
