Switched on Construction of Kenya’s second-largest wind power project (by capacity) has been completed. All 60 wind turbines of the 100 MW Kipeto wind farm are now operational. The project, located in Kajiado county, south of Nairobi, will provide power to the equivalent of 250 000 households. Wind Energy and Electric Vehicle Magazine reports that financial close of the project was reached in December 2018. It is 88% funded by African renewable-energy producer BTE Renewables and 12% by Kenyan-owned Craftskills, with senior debt from the US International Development Finance Corporation. In Kenya, Kipeto is second in size to the 310 MW Lake Turkana wind power project in the Loyangalani district, which was commissioned in 2019. 13 July 2021 Image: USAID Kenya/Mwangi Kirubi
