Climate control A project to bolster Guinea’s management of its mineral and natural resources has secured US$65 million in financing. The Natural Resources, Mining and Environmental Management project forms part of the World Bank’s Country Partnership Framework (2018–2023). The goal is to safeguard the West African nation’s biodiversity against environmental risks associated with its hydropower and mining activities. According to the World Bank, the project’s main tasks include environmental management and providing technical assistance to sustainably develop the country’s mining sector. It hopes that by working to protect ecosystems, the project will enable rural populations in Guinea to adapt to the impacts of climate change. Core objectives include data development and capacity building, climate-change mitigation, strengthening environmental policies and institutions, and improving management of renewable natural resources. 8 June 2021 Image: Gallo/Getty Images
