In Uganda, the largest wastewater-treatment plant in East Africa is now operational.

The Bugolobi-Nakivubo plant is expected to serve more than 350 000 residents across Kampala as well as surrounding areas, treating up to 45 million litres of wastewater per day, according to Uganda’s National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC).

Construction of the plant formed part of the Kampala Sanitation programme’s Lake Victoria Protection Project II, and will soon include biogas digesters that will generate more than 630 kW of electricity.

‘The sewage effluent we release is of good quality and will help to conserve our environment,’ according to Silver Mugisha, MD of the NWSC. ‘The plant will also produce manure to support the agriculture sector.’

The plant was financed by the Ugandan government with support from the AfDB and the EU, as well as French and German development agencies.
