Work on Mozambique’s second-largest solar power station has commenced.

The 41 MW Metoro solar power station project is situated in the country’s Cabo Delgado province, and will be built alongside a substation on a 138 ha area. Some 121 500 PV panels will be installed to generate 68 GWh of power per annum.

The project, which is being developed and managed by renewable independent power producer Neoen, is jointly owned by Neoen (75%) and state-owned power utility EDM (25%).

The power station is being built in line with Mozambique’s 2030 goal of 100% electrification through diversification of energy mix targets and decentralisation of generation, and is expected to ensure a reliable supply and support industrial activities in the region.

The construction phase is set to secure at least 380 jobs, with completion due in Q4 2021. The generated energy will be sold to EDM through a power purchase agreement.
