Construction of Tanzania’s long-awaited liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility is expected to get under way in 2022.

Following years of regulatory delays, the government is set to conclude talks in September with a consortium of international oil companies – including Norway’s Equinor; Royal Dutch Shell; ExxonMobil; Ophir Energy; and Pavilion Energy – to build the US$30 billion plant in the south-eastern town of Lindi, Reuters reports.

The project, to be completed in 2028,  will be located near deep-water natural gas discoveries and will have a capacity to produce 10 million tons of LNG per year.

Tanzania’s LNG sector has an estimated recoverable reserve of more than 57.54 tcf, some of which is already used for power generation and the operation of manufacturing plants.
